More Blue Moon City

Jason and I gave Blue Moon City another go over the weekend. This time around, though I lost miserably, I gained a real appreciation for how well put-together the game is.

Dr. Knizia has managed to once again design a game that feels tense at every turn. There were very few points during the game where I didn’t feel as though I was making a choice on every turn between attractive alternatives, and those few points were usually because I’d already made a decision that would take several turns to execute.

I tried a different strategy this time – generate lots of crystals, and try to get other people to do the hard work. I actually had more than enough crystals to win at the end, but I couldn’t make the offerings fast enough. Poor card management and a slight misstep where I overextended myself cost me a little too much time. I managed to surprise (and annoy) Jason several times during the game, which I can only take as a sign that I was doing something right, but it wasn’t enough.

Still, I really enjoyed the game and I can tell already that it’s an excellent addition to my ever-growing collection of Eurogames.
