A Penny for my Thoughts

Since some of our group members couldn’t make our regular RPG night last Monday, we decided to take a break from Warhammer and try out a different RPG in a single-session style.  The chosen RPG was A Penny For My Thoughts.  We opted for a spy-themed variation , but the basic idea for the game is that all of the players have severe amnesia and can’t remember any of their past.   The other players help you remember your past, and you help them remember theirs.

The game has some interesting mechanics that force you to think on your feet, but at it’s heart it’s a reasonably free-form storytelling game.  There are no dice, and you need virtually no preparation time to play.

This is definitely a game for players who are comfortable improvising as it’s something you have to do a lot of.  One of the core mechanics has other players asking you questions, to which you must answer, “yes”.  For example, on the topic of a woman with a scarlet jacket and black hat, Craig asked me, “Were you attracted to this woman?”  I had to answer yes, and then integrate that into some semblance of a cohesive story with what Jason suggested with his question.

I really enjoyed the game, and want to play it again sometime although maybe with a different theme.  I think it has a lot of potential for generating rich stories, and I highly recommend it if you have a chance to get a copy.
